CODE OF CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINARY RULES

The Code of Conduct represents our ideals for character development and behaviour.

General

  • All students are to comply with all standing regulations including this Code of Conduct, the Student Conduct and Discipline Regulations 2007 and any other rules, regulations and instructions that are issued from time to time.

Behaviour

  • No smoking in the Polytechnic, in Admiralty Park, on all roads, sidewalks, bus stops and overhead bridges around the Polytechnic, and in the area bounded by Woodlands Avenue 2, Woodlands Avenue 9 and Woodlands Street 81.
  • Students below the age of 18 years are not allowed to have in their possession cigarettes or any other tobacco products while in campus, whether for their own use or not.
  • Behave with propriety at all times, that is, no disrespectful behaviour or insubordination to facilitators or any other officers of the Polytechnic including security officers.
  • Always carry with you your Polytechnic Student Card.
  • Do not drink or eat in the class / laboratory / workshop / library.
  • Do not consume drugs or alcohol. Students convicted for the offence of consumption of ecstasy tablets can expect to be sentenced to not less than 12 month's imprisonment.
  • Do not ride or carry a pillion rider without wearing a crash helmet on campus.
  • Do not gamble. Students who are caught gambling would face disciplinary action. Repeat gambling offenders may eventually face expulsion from the Polytechnic.
  • Playing of all card games is prohibited. Any student caught playing cards, where no exchange of money is observed, will be given a written warning if it is the first offence. Thereafter, penalties will increase in severity for repeated offences.
  • Do not litter.
  • No fighting or acts of disturbance.
  • No unauthorised removal of books from the library.
  • No unauthorised entry into Republic Polytechnic's premises.
  • Do not steal Polytechnic property or belongings of other students.
  • Do not damage or lose Polytechnic property. Always report any damage or loss of Polytechnic property to the nearest facilitator or any Polytechnic staff. Please call 63768000 to report any loss or damage.
  • Do not forge medical certificates or other official documents.
  • Any form of vandalism will not be tolerated. Students found guilty will be severely dealt with.
  • Students are not allowed to rent projectors for screening of movies during and after school hours.

Attire

  • Be decently attired in a manner that conforms to social and moral norms.
  • Do not sport hair in outrageous colours.
  • Do not wear sleeveless T-shirts, singlets and shorts (except at sports activities).
  • Do not wear any form of dress which may be improper, indecent or offensive.
  • Do not wear slippers.
  • Veil or purdah is not allowed on campus.

Attire At Workshops / Laboratories

  • Students attending workshops / laboratories must wear proper attire and shoes.
  • Always comply with industrial safety rules as directed by the facilitator.
  • Students who misbehave in class / laboratory / workshop / library / sports facilities may be asked to leave the premises by the Polytechnic's staff.

Failure to abide by these rules may render the student liable for disciplinary action.

Republic Polytechnic Student Conduct and Discipline Regulations 2007

These regulations provide for penalties to be imposed on students for disciplinary offences. A summary of the penalties is given below.

Classification Some Examples of Offences Penalties

Minor

No smoking in the Polytechnic, in Admiralty Park, on all roads, sidewalks, bus stops and overhead bridges around the Polytechnic, and in the area bounded by Woodlands Avenue 2, Woodlands Avenue 9 and Woodlands Street 81.

Possession of tobacco products by a student below the age of 18 years (whether for his own use or not)

Improper grooming, including hairstyle and body piercing)

Improper or indecent dressing

Littering

Committing any act of disturbance

Any other act which the Principal or the Chairman of the Student Disciplinary Committee determines is a misconduct.

One or more of the following:

  • Any appropriate physical work
  • Any course-related work
  • Verbal and/or written warning
  • Informing student's parents/guardians of the misconduct
  • Fine not exceeding $100

Major

Cheating or dishonesty in Understanding Test (UT)

Fighting

Vandalism, destruction or damage to the Polytechnic's property or other property within the Polytechnic's premises

Theft

Disrespectful behavior or insubordination to a facilitator or any other officer including any security officer of the Polytechnic

Possession of dangerous weapons

Non-compliance with or disobedience of orders made by the Principal or such officer as may be authorised by or acting on behalf of the Principal.

Possession and/or consumption of drugs or alcohol or intoxicating substances

Immoral or indecent behaviour

Intrusion into toilet of the opposite sex

Gambling

Forging of documents or possession of forged documents

Unauthorised use and illegal copying of copyrighted materials including printed and/or non-printed matters and computer software, the disclosure of computer passwords to others

Breach of or non-compliance with or non-observance of such rules and regulations as may be made from time to time by the Polytechnic

Any other act, conduct or neglect, which is prejudicial to good order or discipline in the Polytechnic or is likely to bring the Polytechnic into disrepute

Any other Disciplinary Offence

One or more of the following:

  • Any appropriate physical work
  • Any course-related work
  • Verbal and/or written warning
  • Informing student's parents/guardians of the misconduct
  • Fine not exceeding $200
  • Deemed failure in part of or the whole Module or Understanding Test or any other examination
  • Exclusion from any Understanding Test or any other examination
  • Temporary suspension from classes for not more than one academic year
  • Dismissal from Polytechnic
