Build, Swim, Race at Singapore’s Inaugural Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2009

Republic Polytechnic (RP), the tertiary institution that approaches learning with a difference, will be organising the inaugural Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2009, the first underwater robot design competition for secondary schools in Singapore.

Fusing arts and technology, 60 teams from 42 secondary schools in Singapore will be racing their very own underwater robot designs. RP has received overwhelming response from schools vying for limited team slots in the Olympiad. It received 121 team applications in total but due to time and space constraints, the organizing committee could only accommodate 60 teams at the coming event.

Underwater robotics has almost reached fever-pitch at RP after the tertiary institution swept the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the underwater robot category at the Singapore Robotic Games in January 2009. Through the Olympiad, RP aims to cultivate an interest among the young to pursue research and development in underwater robotics, and bring about innovative applications such as the commercial use of robots for environmental cleaning or surveillance purposes.

The event which is hosted by The School of Engineering and supported by the Science Centre will give away cash prizes and trophies to the winning teams based on speed and design.

You and your camera crew are cordially invited to the Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2009.
