RP Dragon Boat Wins At Penang Pesta 2006

RP’s Dragon Boat Interest Group (IG) took a bus up to Penang last weekend to compete in the Penang Pesta Dragon Boat Race.

“Pesta” means “festival” in Malay and Penang Pesta is a month-long event organized by Malaysia to promote their tourism industry. Dragon boat racing is one of the attractions in this festival.

A total of 24 teams from Singapore and Malaysia took part in the race, to vie for 7 titles in all.

RP managed to clinch medals in the grand finals for 2 of the events, namely the Open (Mixed) Race and the Open (Junior) Race.

What’s more valuable than the silver and bronze medals that we obtained, is the experience gained from the competition. The race was held in the open seas and the choppy waters were unlike anything we have previously encountered during our local training sessions and competitions. Luckily for RP, our paddlers were able to make some last minute improvisations to our usual strokes to adapt to the difficult water conditions.

Congratulations RP Dragons!
