Scoring BIG in Basketball

The 2nd series of the BIG Game was held in Republic Polytechnic from 7th to 9th December 2006. This year’s competition moved on from the quicker streetball 3-on-3 format to a more challenging 5-on-5 full court, all-out game. This time, 15 points were all that teams required to win. With a fresh outlook, the tournament was championed as “The BIG 15 Basketball Championship 2006”.

Adopting the theme “Basketball is Great!” the BIG Game is part of a series of basketball initiatives aimed at promoting and improving the standard of local youth basketball. RP also uses this tournament as a platform to identify talented youths; the BIG Game organizers commended 12 participants for their excellent basketball skills and named them as the BIG Game All Stars for 2006.

With 39 teams participating in 3 different categories and vying for the top spot, it was a challenging and grueling task for the 312 participants who competed in this 3-day tournament. Each team also received goodies from the Singapore Sports Council, Molten Singapore, Singapore Slingers, DOS Apparels, The Sports People and SportMag. Judging from participants' reviews and the huge daily turnout, this year’s BIG installment is quite possibly the BIGgest in the series to date.

Players from the NBL basketball team, the Singapore Slingers, surprised everyone with daily visits. Participants jumped at the chance to get up close with the local basketball stars, request for photos and even get getting their jerseys signed. Brad Davidson, point guard for the Slingers put on a fine display of 3 points shooting when he hosted the 3 point championship during the first 2 days of the tournament.

After 3 days of hot court action, teams Obsence, Tagawa and Mee Kia clinched the championship in the Women, U17 Men and U19 Men categories respectively. More than a simple achievement, these teams got the attention of spectators and talent scouts with their court skills. Hopes are up, for these promising young sportsmen and women, to achieve more in the next BIG game in 2007.

Play on!
