The
RP team achieved an excellent third placing in the POL-ITE winners' table at the
recently concluded POL-ITE Floorball Championships 2006. As the RP floorball
girls’ team had been unable to make it to the top three positions in recent
years, this breakthrough is indeed a historic milestone for the team! The team
has been training intensively for the past few months and practically every day
during the two weeks leading up to the Championships. The floorball girls had
been spending their days on the floorball court, be it training in RP, or at the
competition venue, ITE College East Sports Hall.
On
17th November 2006, the final day for the Championships, RP met Singapore
Polytechnic's team in an intense and nerve-wrecking match. As it was the
deciding match to secure RP's third position on the table, the girls showed
nothing but determination and grit all the way against their worthy opponents.
After being unable to score during the first period of the match, the girls were
given a motivational talk by their coach, Seah Joo Yee. The talk proved to be
useful as Natthida Khajornjiraphan (2nd year, DBMS/SAS), vice-captain of the
floorball girls’ team, scored the first goal in the 4th minute of the second
period.
At
the start of the third period, forward Siti Rafidah Bte Abdul Samad (2nd year,
DBMS/SAS) scored the second goal for RP within just 11 seconds from face-off!
Her spectacular performance urged the RP team, fueling their thirst for more
goals. Within the next five minutes, centre forward, Ng Mei Wei (3rd year, DBC/SIT)
came in sharp and scored the third goal and RP was on course to seal an
important victory. Although SP fought back hard, their forwards just could not
match up to RP’s strong defence. Centre forward, Nur Aishah Mahmod (3rd year,
DBMS/SAS) then scored another goal for RP in the last minute, sealing a 4 – 0
win over SP.
Overall, the girls did well in terms of sportsmanship, skill and speed. The
first week of the POL-ITE games proved to be difficult for the team, suffering
two consecutive losses to NYP and ITE (with scores of 3 -1 and 7 – 1
respectively). Nevertheless, their advisor, Ms Janelle Koh, motivated the team
to strive forward and to push even harder for the rest of the matches.
The
team, led by Captain, Norhayati Bte Abdul Rahman (3rd year, DBMS), brought the
team to three victories in the second week, beating SP (4 – 0) and NP (3 – 0)
and drawing with TP (1 – 1). She was definitely the backbone of the team, never
failing to motivate her teammates even when they were struggling during the
match with ITE.
