A group of 20 teachers from Pasir Ris Secondary School visited Republic Polytechnic (RP)
today to find out more about how we do things here. Dr Alwis, Director of Office of Academic Affairs, spoke to them about the reasons behind RP’s choice of adopting Problem Based Learning as our learning pedagogy.
The teachers also took this opportunity to learn more about what PBL is about as well as to ask questions and clarify their doubts.
One of the concerns highlighted was whether RP students can get used to the lecture-tutorial system when they further their studies at institutions which use the traditional education system. Dr Alwis’ reply was a resounding yes! He gave the example of some of our graduates who are now studying in Monash University. The girls are doing very well there; one of them even scored 4 distinctions for her first semester.
While Dr Alwis was able to give a verbal description of what and how we do things here at RP, he advised that the best way was for the teachers to come and observe our classes so they can see for themselves how our students learn.
The visit ended with a token of appreciation presented to RP and a cosy lunch at our air conditioned canteen.
