21 students from the International Students Club (ISC)
visited different types of farms in Singapore on 19 November 06
(Sunday).
The 1-day trip educates our foreign students, and gives them
an in-depth understanding of the different aspects of agriculture and domestic
care available in the midst of this urban city. The students visited a goat
farm, bull frog farm, fish farm, vegetable farm, the Bollyhood Organics Farm, a
dragon-fruit Farm and the Pet House.
It was an eye-opener trip for the foreign students. Yu Jie
(Year 1 student from China) mentioned that it was something she had never
experienced before. At the goat farm, they experienced goat-milking and tasted
fresh goat milk. The group then moved on to the Bollyhood Poison IV Restaurant
for a sumptuous organic lunch (what a name!). The unique thing about this
restaurant has got to be the fruits and vegetable served – all are grown in the
restaurant’s orchard yard, which was also opened to public touring. Next, the
students made a trip to the largest fish farm in Singapore where they saw
different kinds of tropical fishes and also enjoyed the ‘Fish Spa’ - getting
your feet massaged by fishes! Although it was incredibly ticklish during the
first few minutes of the spa session, it soon became quite relaxing and
pleasantly enjoyable. Everyone enjoyed it so much and even promised to re-visit
once a month for the unusual spa experience!
At nightfall, the highlight of the day came in the form of a
Mongolian Buffet! There was a spread of sumptuous dishes and for two hours,
everyone was busy talking and enjoying the buffet. Soon, it was time for
everyone to head back to Republic Polytechnic.
At the
end of the one-day Farm Education tour, everyone got their hands dirty, just to
be close to nature in an urban landscape.
