8th Start-up@Singapore National Business Plan Competition Talk at RP

Start-up@Singapore is the National Business Plan Competition organized by NUSBSA and NUS Entrepreneurship Centre. This nationwide competition is organized for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship, and to provide a platform for people with ideas to convert them into reality.

On 10 November 2006, students and staff gathered at LT W3 to find out more about the Start-up@Singapore National Business Plan Competition and get tips from our guest speaker, Mr Lee Junior (Co-Founder of ACE Nexus). Mr Lee serves as an Advisor on the Steering Committee for the competition.  He spoke about the “Emotive Aspects of Entrepreneurship” and shared with the audience his experiences on various aspects of starting a business.

Mr Lee captured the attention of the audience and interacted well with them, encouraging every individual to “dare to try” as people only regret what they do not try at all.  He emphasized the importance of planning when starting a business, stressing that everyone should understand the importance of knowledge, having the network and seizing their opportunities.

Mr Lee also gave the audience some invaluable pointers about what they need to learn when starting a business.  Some of the aspects one must be able to juggle between are:

  • Marketing

  • Finance

  • Fund-raising

  • Legal & IP

  • Scalability

  • Defensibility

Mr Lee also shared some interesting personal anecdotes with the audience and said that one must not only be able to talk the talk (learn all the required jargon and do your ‘homework’) but one must also be able to walk the walk.  Being an entrepreneur requires mental toughness and resilience, and the flexibility to adapt oneself in any situation.  It is also about working well as a team.  While there are many obstacles that one may face initially, without risks there would also be no returns. It was a truly insightful talk as the audience left with a better awareness and understanding of entrepreneurship.

Staff and students interested in implementing their ideas are encouraged to register for the 8th Start-Up@Singapore National Business Plan Competition.  Registration is open till the 26 January 2007.  For more information about the competition, please refer to: www.startup.org.sg.
