Forty five students from Yishun Town Secondary School and Riverside Secondary
School had a unique opportunity to experience PBL in RP. They racked their
brains and honed their problem solving skills throughout the five days, in RP’s
“One-Day, One-Problem™” setting. Faced with the interesting problems in science
and mathematics, they had to stretch their capabilities to respond to the
problems.

Initially, many of the students were surprised when the facilitators refused to answer their
questions. Instead, they were encouraged to clear their doubts through research
and team discussions. The students managed to overcome their initial disappointments and
eventually realised that they could do it on their own by sourcing for
information and working effectively as a team. Their communication skills were
also put to the test as they had to express their ideas
and findings clearly during the daily presentations. At the end of each day,
the students reflected on their learning and expressed their thoughts and experiences in
their reflection journals.
Through this programme organized by RP's Centre for Science and Mathematics, the
school teachers observed that the students were capable of independent learning
and were more confident during their presentations. Many students felt that the
heavy thinking process they had to go through promoted effective learning. One
of the students mentioned that he had learnt “to solve problems even without
the help of teachers.”. Feedback gathered from the students showed that most
of them would recommend this programme to their friends.
