Clean and Green Week 2006: Youths for the Environment - Stay Cool, Go Green!

Clean & Green Week (CGW) enters its 17th year this year. The campaign after almost two decades has helped raise awareness that everyone needs to play a part in taking care of the environment and not take it for granted. The environment around us is an integral part of the pursuit for a better quality of life.

While this message needs to reach all levels of the population, it is important that youths, in particular, learn to make choices that have a positive impact on the environment, as the country’s future lies in their hands. This year’s theme “Youths for the Environment” was chosen to encourage young Singaporeans to take positive action for the environment.

In line with NEA’s goal of nurturing a generation of Singaporeans who care for the environment, Republic Polytechnic was invited to come on board as one of the co-organisers of CGW this year.

This exciting event saw more than 1000 RP students involved in the actual CGW launch event, as well as the events leading up to CGW. For the launch of CGW 2006, 400 RP students played their part for the environment.

Hip Hop IG (Style Methodz) opening performance
The environmentally themed Hip Hop dance item was presented to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as the welcome performance of the CGW 2006 launch. The following members of the Hip Hop IG (Ismael Khan Surattee, Nor Liyana Bte Mohammed Zakii, Leong Jia Min Germaine, Teo Peixiang, Syafiq B Azhar, Cheu Kai Wen, Goh Zi Xun, Chow Wing Yan) certainly showed the audience what it means to stay cool, go green!

RP Green Booth
Countless meetings and serious planning were devoted, and sleepless nights spent to ensure the success of the RP Green Booth that was showcased during the CGW 2006 launch. Under the guidance of Mr Laurence Tan, Senior Manager, Office of Estates (OES), and Ms Grace Tan, staff advisor of the Chiron Club, Eliza Yeo (President, Chiron Club) led her team of capable members to set up and manage the booth, from conceptualization to production and the execution (setting up of the booth).

The RP Green Booth aims to showcase the green features of RP as well as the environmentally friendly initiatives undertaken by RP students. The recent RP 10,000 Plastic Bottles Challenge and the “Vote Against Litter Movement” were the main highlights of the booth.

The students’ efforts paid off when Prime Minister Lee visited the RP booth in the later part of the morning. Alongside Professor Low Teck Seng, Principal and CEO of RP, Glendon Loo, a 3rd year SAS student (Chiron Club Management Committee Member) had the privilege of sharing the key green features of our campus with PM Lee.

The RP Student Ambassadors were proud to play host to CGW visitors as they brought them on the RP Green Tour which aims to showcase the green features found on our campus. The visitors toured the south court yard, Lawn, Bio lungs@ at the multi-storey Carpark, and the Eco city exhibit.

Every effort was made to ensure that visitors who came to our booth left impressed! From lucky draws to face painting (RP ART Interest Group), to giving out 400 balloons by RP’s very own balloon sculptors, there’s something for everyone to bring home!

We thank the Office of Estates and Office of Student and Graduate Affairs for their kind guidance and for the valuable opportunity to undertake this event.

Leave your green mark! Community planting @ Admiralty Park
The “LEAVE YOUR GREEN MARK” movement was conceptualized by the Chiron Club Management Committee and supported by the Student Union EXCO. We hope that through this meaningful and holistic activity, RP students and staff will be able to leave their green mark on campus, raising environmental awareness and be encouraged to take ownership of the environment.
