JIVE IG, the new events
management IG within the Young Aspirers’ Club, launched their first campus-wide
event, “8 to AIDS” from 1st to 3rd November with support from Action For AIDS (AFA).
“8 to AIDS” is Republic
Polytechnic’s entry for the StompAIDS Challenge 2006, a nation-wide marketing
competition on promoting the level of AIDS awareness to tertiary students,
organised and sponsored by the Health Promotion Board (HPB). Other participating
institutes included NUS, NTU, SIM, TP, NP and ITE. The organising student team
received news of their short-listing in September this year.
The team consisted of:
-
Carina Tan Jew Yin (SIT/DBD Year 3
Student)
-
Liu Kei Him Dennis (CIE/DIEM Year 1
Student)
-
Tam Shi Ming Sherwin Edgar
(CIE/DIEM Year 1 Student)
-

The team worked closely
with JIVE advisors, Mr Eddie Chua (CIE), Mr Chronos Kwok (CIE) and Ms Janice Low
(CIE) to educate students the nature of HIV/AIDS, its risks and
consequences and the best protection and prevention against the deadly disease.
JIVE IG introduced
different key lunch-time events everyday during the three-day
event.
On the first day, a forum discussion on
relationship by former MP and certified marriage and family
counsellor Dr. Dixie Tan was held, followed by a talk on AIDS issues and
prevention by Mr. Benedict from Action For AIDS (AFA) on the second day. The
event wrapped up with a T-shirt competition design on the third and last day.
Mohammad Hadif Adzim Bin Azmi
(DIOM) emerged as the first-placed winner of the competition.
Aside from the lunchtime talks, the
students also set up exhibition panels to educate Republicans on nature of
HIV/AIDS and AIDS prevention. A charity bazaar involving external vendors was
also set up in RP during the second and third days as a fund-raising charity
drive for AFA, to assist them in their efforts for outreach
awareness, financial assistance to patients, and medical support.
JIVE IG also received warm support from other IGs such as EMP, which hosted a
song dedication booth on the final day and Rexaz, which gave an energetic
cheerleading performance to bring “8 to AIDS” to a close.
