On Sunday, 6 November 2006, a mix of students from the five
schools in RP gathered together to try something completely different - THE ART OF USED CANS.
In the midst of a prevalently 'throw away' culture amongst the youth of
Singapore, it is a refreshing change to see students actively promoting
conservation. The 'scene of the crime' was the annual Clean and Green week
celebrations held at RP this year.
Members of the Marquee Troupe II participated in the Can! Art
Sculpture competition, to amazing results. Their depiction of a Thai
elephant as a symbol of strength and endurance won the hearts and minds of the
judges and they walked away with the top prize and a plaque, emerging tops out of
the 12 teams that participated.
The prize money won will go towards fund-raising efforts to
support their expedition to Chiangrai, Thailand in December this year. In
Chiangrai, the team will be working on cultural documentation (both web and
film) of the Raummit Village in the Mae-Yao district. The students hope to
return hope with a greater awareness of the importance of service, application
of know-how in a real-life environment and the beauty of giving back to
communities whenever they can.
The team will be furthering their fund-raising efforts with
premium ice-cream and orchid sales and in the true spirit of team-work, a
Woodlands precinct-wide Garung Guni collaboration with two other expedition
teams will be organized later his month.
The Marquee Troupe II thanks all supporters, friends and
family for generously donating cans, love and cheer! Massive 'thank you's all
round!
The Marquee Troupe II is an OSG overseas Service-Learning Expedition team
advised by Jessica Ang from CED and Bob Tan from STA.
