Smile, you’ve done Singapore Proud!

On the night of 17th October 2006, that was what Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the organizers and volunteers of Singapore 2006 (S2006). S2006 was the biggest international event Singapore had ever organized.

Republic Polytechnic, together with other tertiary institutions such as NTU, SMU, TP, SP and others, had a role to play in this well-organised, efficient and impressive event which left a good impression on all the delegates and business leaders.

Republic Polytechnic had a total of 104 volunteers. They had taken on the role of the bus-host. Led by Mr. Alexander Sarsito Sia, Chief Coordinator of RP from Office of Student and Graduate Affairs, the students underwent 3 levels of trainings which spanned for a period of 3 months so that they can be ready for this role.

The result of all their hard work and training was well worth the while as the S2006 delegates were impressed with the pride and efficiency demonstrated by all the volunteers. PM Lee also took note that many of the female students had blisters on their feet because they had to walk around in new high heeled court shoes while continuing going about their duties cheerfully.

On this night, after PM Lee’s address, he presented a plaque to the respective organizations. Mr. Alexander Sarsitor Sia received the award on behalf of RP.

After the presentation, during the midst of the numerous performances on display, PM Lee managed to catch up with 2 of our students, Mr. Tan Chee Yuen, 3rd year student from SEG and Ms. Casey Chin Kai Yi, 1st year student from SEG and revealed to them that he is looking forward to visiting RP in 2007.

With that, the celebration began with Singapore Idol Hady Mirza’s first public appearance. This was the night to show Singapore’s appreciation to the volunteers. Indeed, this was the night we know we have done Singapore proud, well-deserving the 4 million smiles!
