On the 10th and 11th October 2006, the Office of Estates,
Office of Students and Graduate Affairs and Office of Human Resources jointly
organised a security awareness talk in Republic Polytechnic (RP). This was to
bring home the message that crime prevention is a shared responsibility.
The talks began with a presentation by Mr Vanesh from G4S,
the company who is in charge of RP’s campus security. He touched upon the
various security features in place to ensure the safety of all students and
staff. This ranged from regular patrols on foot or via buggy to guard dogs
during the night time. Students staying at Campus Heights (Student Housing in
RP) were advised not to wonder around the polytechnic at night as there were
still some areas under construction and workers roaming around.
This was followed by an interactive session conducted by the
friendly police officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Woodlands
Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC). Senior Staff Sergeant Yeo Chiah Tiong and
Staff Sergeant Alex Lim Jing Yao gave the presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday
respectively. The presentations focused on 2 themes – Personal Safety and
Thefts. Students participated spontaneously during the short quizzes and were
awarded with a complimentary item from the SPF.
Everyone present had an enjoyable time and left with a lot of useful tips to
prevent crimes from happening. One such example is to keep track of the IMEI
number of your mobile phone. Every phone has a unique IMEI number which can be
displayed by dialing the code *#06# or by looking at the original box of the
phone. In the case of a mobile phone theft, this would assist the police to
track down the thief.
Aside from the lunchtime talks, the Woodlands NPC also set up exhibition panels
to educate Republicans on crime prevention. For those who missed out on the
talks, they still had the opportunity to view the useful advice.
