RP's Red Cross Interest Group (IG) volunteered to help the Woodlands Community Centre in
a blood donation drive on 24 September 06. It took place at the multipurpose hall of the community centre.
Even though it was a Sunday, members of the Red Cross IG were there early
in the morning to help out with registration of donors as well as providing
refreshments for them. They were also given the important task of educating the
public on bone marrow transplants.
Even though dealing with donors sounds like a simple task, it
was very important in this blood donation drive as they had to ensure that the donors provided accurate information about
themselves before donating blood. Donors were required to fill up a form to
provide their medical history and to state if they had any medical conditions. Our IG members were more than helpful in answering all the queries the public had.
It was indeed an eye opening experience for the IG members,
especially since this is the first collaboration with an external organisation to hold a blood donation drive. We were able to pick up very useful
tips from experienced members of the
Woodlands Community Centre. They gave us tips on how to handle people, how to communicate, how to explain the importance
of giving out correct information when filling up the forms etc.
At the end of the event, each of us were given certificates
of appreciation for our contributions to the event. We went home that day with a
sense of satisfaction and pride.
