Service Learning in
Republic Polytechnic was honoured on 12 August 2006 at the National Youth Service
Learning Awards 2006. The EcoTrail team that went to Chiang Rai in Northern
Thailand in December 2005 was presented with a Merit award, one of five awards given to
outstanding service learning projects organised by tertiary institutions. The
team leader, Jimmy Woon, received the award on behalf of the team from Dr Vivian
Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.
The RP EcoTrail team mapped
and documented a popular tourist trail that took them through hilltribe villages
and scenic vistas. The team then produced publicity materials, signboards
and directional markers to further enhance the experience for potential trail
walkers. Working with a local Non-Governmental Organisation, the Mirror Art
Group, the team also developed educational information about the hilltribe
communities. Upon their return, the team organised several exhibitions of the
trip and busied themselves in preparing for the next round of the project to be
held at the end of this year.
The team was nominated
for the National Youth Service Learning Awards based on the success of the
project and in engendering learning among the participants. The team also had to
go through a rigorous round of interviews and presentations to showcase how the
service benefited the community and how learning and reflection was conducted
effectively during the project. The EcoTrail team is grateful to support
received from the National Youth Council and RP.
