Opening of RP Student Career Centre - 1 Aug 2006

The new Student Career Centre (SCC), strategically located in the library, was officially opened on the 1 August 2006 (Tuesday). It aims to be the hub where students can visit to plan their future career path.

The Republic Polytechnic (RP) SCC was set up with the primary intent to help students make their career decisions and find gainful employment. SCC offers a comprehensive suite of career development services. These services were developed and implemented in alignment with students' career needs. Examples of such services include career coaching, career resources, career workshops and talks, industry roadshows, career fairs, job placements, etc.

To mark this special opening, several activities were lined up for staff and students. There were grooming sessions, card sort activities on skills analysis and self discovery, career coaching, quizzes, etc. A few companies were also invited to set up booths at the opening to provide RP students with full-time or part-time employment opportunities. As a result, the opening of the SCC attracted many staff and students.

To provide students with useful knowledge on aspects of career development, 3 career talks were organized on the opening day. The first career talk started with Ms Zalina of Adecco giving a light hearted presentation on “Resume for First-Timers”. The students were given an interesting perspective on what an employer looks out for in a rookie’s resume. This was followed by another interesting talk by Mr Tim Clark from RP's School of Technology for the Arts (STA), who is also a Career Coach with SCC. He delighted the students with his confession on “How I Sweet Talked Myself Into A Glamorous and High-Paying Career”. The speaker for the third career talk was Ms Marion Neubronner from RP's Centre of Education Development (CED) who provided an interesting insight on “No Money to Study Overseas? Help Is Everywhere If You Know How”.

At the end of the day, students enjoyed themselves and more importantly, took home with them many interesting learning points with regards to career advancements. This opening day for the SCC marks the start of more fun and interesting career activities which RP students can look forward to.
