Minister of State, Mr Gan Kim Yong Visits RP

On 21 April 2006, Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State ( for Ministry of Manpower & Ministry of Education) arrived at Republic Polytechnic Centre (RPC) accompanied by staff from Ministry of Education (Higher Education Division). He was welcomed by RP’s Principal and CEO, Professor Low Teck Seng.

Mr Gan proceeded on to the boardroom where he was introduced to the various school, centre and departmental directors. Everybody enjoyed a sumptuous buffet lunch while Professor Low and Mr Glen O’Grady, Director of Centre for Educational Development (CED), gave a concise presentation of RP and our Problem-Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy.

After the initial introduction to RP, Mr Gan was brought on a campus tour to visit our new facilities. The first stop was the library where there was an exhibition awaiting him. The projects on exhibit included Creative Profiling (Lobster Cultivation), Professional Profiling, Service Learning, international student attachments and RP's Technology Development Centre (TDC). There was active interaction between Mr Gan and the project participants as he viewed the exhibits.

The second part of the campus tour saw Mr Gan walk up to the lawn area where he had an overview of the learning hubs. This is where all the hubs are interconnected to one another via the Agora. Heading towards Block W2, he sat in at a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) laboratory class before proceeding to view our SMART Lecture Theatre (LT). This particular LT is technically enhanced to promote learning and conduct tele-conferences. In order to get a better understanding of how PBL works, Mr Gan sat in to a Year 1 class for its third Meeting.

To conclude the tour, Mr Gan went on to W1 Forum, where there was a display of student activities. On one side of the Forum, Judo and Aikido members were practising their moves on the mats. On the other side, students were engaged in a lively discussion regarding issues of their student interest groups. A short tea session brought the visit to an end as Mr Gan expressed his thanks to RP on having conducted such a wonderful tour.
