Official launch of School of Sports, Health and Leisure.

As the 23rd SEA Games drew to a close in Philippines, many Singaporeans are jubilant over the fact that our athletes managed to garner 42 gold medals, which is seven medals up from the initial expectation. This is a clear indication that Singapore is serious about making a mark in the international sports scene. Coupled with plans to develop Integrated Resorts, it is a golden opportunity to tap into this growing industry of sports and leisure.

To meet the specialised needs and demands of Singapore’s fast growing sports, fitness and leisure industry, Republic Polytechnic’s fifth school: the School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) was officially launched at the Sports and Fitness Expo 2005 at Suntec Singapore on 1 Dec 2005.

The school was aptly launched in a sports style by inviting RP’s Deputy Principal, Mr Eden Liew to kick a soccer ball into a goal post. This was then followed by SHL staff, Mr Abdul Kahlid and Ms Olivia Chey climbing up and then rappelling off rock walls to reveal two banners that shout “Official Launch: School of Sports, Health and Leisure”. This elicited thunderous applause and admiring gazes from all present.

Aside from the official launch of the new School, RP and Sports & Fitness Expo jointly organised the Sports & Fitness Challenge 2005. This challenge comprised of five stations, each testing general fitness of agility, speed, upper and lower body muscular strength and reaction time. A goodie bag was given to participants who completed all 5 stations, whilst grand prizes of Polar watches and Adidas merchandise awaited the winners of each station.

Throughout the four days at Suntec Convention Hall 603, there were many enquiries regarding the upcoming courses offered by SHL. The School plans to offer three full-time diploma programmes that are currently pending approval by the Ministry of Education . They are, namely, the Diploma in Sports & Exercise Sciences, Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management and Diploma in Integrated Events Management. Part-time programmes are still on the drawing board.

Kudos to all who helped make the official SSHL launch a successful one!
