It was 11 Oct 2005, a day of anticipation for Republic Polytechnic’s staff &
students. All classes ended early at 3pm so that all staff and students could
proceed to the Foyer to welcome the State’s President together.
5 minutes…2 minutes…30 seconds, 3, 2 ,1! As the President’s white Mercedes
arrived at the Foyer at exactly 3pm sharp, RP’s Lion Dance group started the 1st
drum beat and brought the excitement level to an all-time high. President S R
Nathan alighted from the car and was warmly received by RP’s Principal, Deputy
Principal, the Director of Higher Education from MOE, as well as senior
management members.
Our Multi-Cultural Dance Group then presented a graceful and elegant dance performance to welcome the President.
The route to the library was adorned with beautiful plants & flowers
along the red-carpeted path. The President was next greeted by the Student Union EXCO members who were proudly dressed in their white RP polo t-shirts.
Upon entering the library, President Nathan received a very warm welcome
from
our librarian, Ms Ho Yen Wah, who invited the President to sign
on the Guest-of-Honour guestbook. This was no ordinary guestbook : it was a brand
new 12” Tablet PC which was electronically and wirelessly linked to all the 5
plasma TVs in the entire campus.
Staff and students who were outside the Library
were able to catch the significant moment in real-time when the President signed
the specially designed “electronic plaque”, produced specially for President
Nathan to sign. Immediately after that, President Nathan was led
to the main exhibition area of the library, where he was shown an impressive 3-D
model of RP’s new home in 2006 – the Woodlands Campus in Woodlands Ave 9.
