After missing last season’s Singapore Canoe Marathon, Republic Canoeing was all set to take part in this year’s most arduous and highly competitive long distance canoeing race!
It was a sunny Sunday morning on the 17th of January at the newly renovated Marina Reservoir with over 300 participants waiting for the signal to be off on their respective distances. Republic Canoeing (RPC) sent a total of 42 canoeists down to the marathon to battle it out with the other institutions and clubs.
All seniors were to take part in the senior category: 36km for men and 27km for women. RPC’s junior crew took part in the novice category of 14km, where most of the marathon’s participants were in, which made it even more challenging for them to secure a place at the top.
But nonetheless team RP’s determination and might was seen in the waters as the senior category were sent off to their 8 rounds with 7 portages for men’s and 6 rounds with 5 portages for women’s. The novice category was sent off shortly on their 3 rounds with 2 portages and 3 rounds only for T-boat participants. (Portaging is where participants have to dismount from their boat and shoulder it for a distance of 150m along a beach and get back into their craft again to continue their marathon)
