Republic Canoeing takes home Silver at
POL-ITE games 2009

A momentous day awaited Republic Polytechnic Canoe (RPC) at the first official Kayak Sprint POL-ITE games organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The event was held at MacRitchie reservoir on the 28th of November.

The team showed no fear towards their competitors after going through a year of intensive training with the guidance of Coaches Lee Kai Yang and Toh Keng Wi. They made their way to secure a place in the finals, and won the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

Ng Yong Ann showed resilience as he managed to clinch a Gold medal in the 500m, defeating powerhouse SP after losing his chance on getting a medal in the 1000m. Along with another K1 knight of our team, Teo Choun Meng managed to walk off with a bronze medal in the 1000m despite being close to getting another Bronze medal in the 500m by just one second.

K2 duo Muhd Hairul/Benjamin Chew clocked impressive timings and gave their best in the extremely tough finals of Men’s K2 category. The newly formed K2 pair Nicholas Chong/Yusri Mahfuz secured a placing in the 1000m finals too, earning the team precious points and gaining respect from fellow teammates and competitors for their ferocity in the waters.

Our K1 heroes, Ng Yong Ann and Teo Choun Meng joined forces with K2 pair Muhd Hairul/Benjamin Chew in the K4 men’s 500m, stealing the Gold away from our rival polytechnics. Nicholas Chong/Yusri Mahfuz/Kenneth Ng/Dominic Ong’s performance in K4 1000m was powerful enough to pull up the points higher for RP, but despite their valiant efforts, the bronze medals were nicked from them by just 2 seconds.

Along with another K4 consisting of Tomi Tan/Jonathan Ang/Jonathan Choo/Jaffar Mohd clocked an impressive timing despite the crew having only weeks of training on the K4.

C1 warrior, Wahyudi managed to earn himself a Silver medal in the 500m despite returning back to training two months before the race due to shoulder injuries. Joshua Lin did well too, securing a fourth placing in the same event and bringing back valuable points to help RP secure a better overall placing.

Despite not being able to retain the Championship title, the girl’s team manage to give a convincing fight to all their competitors. K2 pairs Joanne Gao/Beverly Brenda Kim and Catherine Teo/Chang Zhen Yu did well in both 1000m and 500m race sets, securing Silver and fifth placing respectively. Their combined efforts shot up the points standing for RP women’s.

Lady-knights Adeline Yuen and Neo Sihong showed a brilliant performance in the Women’s K1 category. Despite losing a chance in taking back a medal in the 500m, Adeline Yuen managed a Bronze in the 1000m along with Neo Sihong coming in fifth in both events again bringing back treasured points.

Newly formed K4 Women’s Crew, Angeline Tan/Doris Ho/Joey Lim/Gan Sheau Jun did well in both 500m and 1000m races, securing a placing in fourth, earning points for team. 1000m K4 crew consisting of, Catherine Teo/Adeline Yuen/Kelroy Wee/Chang Zhen Yu went all out, winning a Silver despite training together for only several weeks.

Senior K4 Crew Joanne Gao/Neo Sihong/Beverly Brenda Kim and year 2’s Kelroy Wee fought with only one thing on their minds in the K4 500m; to retain the Championship title. With that being the last race of the women’s event, our K4 heroines pushed themselves to the limits but came in short by just a few seconds and took home a bronze medal.
