Another win in the 32nd National Lifesaving Championship 2009 for Aquatic IG

It was a fast-paced and exhilarating moment for everyone. On 2nd, 15th and 16th August 2009, Team Republic Aquatic IG did us proud by clinching 5 medals in the inaugural 32nd National Lifesaving Championship 2009.

On 2nd August 2009, Aquatic IG competed in the strong-opponent still water competition, held at the Kallang Basin Swimming Complex. We brought home 4 medals from this competition. It was a proud and wonderful moment for our winners as they stood at the grand stand to receive their medals, holding our Republic Polytechnic flag in front of the crowd.

Two weeks later, on 15th August 2009, we competed in the open water competition, held at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. It was on the sand-based competition where all the beach running and beach flag events were hosted. With tears of joy and happiness, we comforted each other and held our spirits up throughout the whole competition. We ended the day with a winning and ‘never give-up’ attitude.

This was closely followed by another competition in the open water competition category held on the following day, 16th August 2009, which was still held at the Silosa Beach, Sentosa. This involved both the sea and the sand events. None of us were tired, despite having consecutive competitions held on both days. This clearly showed the steel of Team Republic Aquatic IG.

Here are the medalist clinchers:

Gold Medalist: 200m Obstacle Swim
(Dharsaka Hasanka Tennekoon – 2:21:69 sec)

Bronze medalist: 200m Obstacle Swim (Cassandra Chua Wan Yi – 2:48:36 sec)

Silver Medalists: 4 X 25m Manikin Tow Relay (From left: Pang Yong Kai, Dharsaka Hasanka Tennekoon, Tan Weihao Marvin, Li Ning – 1:44:74 sec)

Silver Medalist: 100m Manikin Tow with Fins
(Cassandra Chua Wan Yi – 1:17:65 sec)

Bronze Medalist: Rescue Tube Rescue (From left: Teo Kaythiam James, Dharsaka Hasanka Tennekoon, Tan Weihao Marvin, Lim Long Fei)

“Life begins in the water” – that is what each and every individual has in mind. We have put up a good fight against some of the stronger teams in the competition. What we have gained from this inaugural 32nd National Lifesaving Championship 2009 is not only winning medals and beating our best timings; we gained friendships from other schools and clubs. Our hardwork and perseverance throughout the training sessions under the scorching sun paid off with a splendid display of the character and spirit of Team Republic.

The team will build up from here, challenging ourselves to achieve greater heights and eventually take on the big teams. Thank you to everyone who has made this a successful journey for many of us. This includes the strong backbone of the lifesaving team, our coach Mr Jeremy Tan, our advisors Mr Gary Su and Mr Jeremy Wu for their motivation and support, our juniors for lifting the spirits up with their endless cheers and most importantly, the competitors themselves for the perseverance and possessing a ‘winners’ attitude. Well done Team Republic Aquatic IG!
