Republic Archery wins Silver in NUS Indoor Championship 2009

13 and 14 June not only marked the end of the June holiday, it was also the NUS Indoor Archery Open Championship!



This Championship is one of its kind in Singapore as it is the only indoor competition hence winning a medal is prestigous. Our archers went with the belief that they would bring glory to Republic Polytechnic in this Championship. The competition was held over two days. It comprised various targets and are placed 18 metres away.

It was raining in the morning on day one but luckily the competition was held indoors, unlike our usual training venue which is held outdoors. The individual scoring rounds for the Recurve Novice and Recurve Closed categories were held on this day and all our archers were psyched and ready to prove their worth. It was a tough competition because we were in the open category. We not only faced archers from Singapore but also those from other countries. Singapore's national archers were also competing. This raised the competition's standards. It was definitely an uphill task to compete against strong opponents.



This did not dampen our archers - Farhan and Jia Wei, who were competing in the Recurve Novice Male Category were joined by Stephanie, Li Qing and Zhi Mei in the Recurve Novice Female Category. They did not succumb to the pressure and shot their best.



This was followed by the Recurve Closed Category where RP archers - Elwin, Yi Jing, Nigel, Bjorn, Nicholas and Simon - were all up against strong competitors. Our Nale Team, nicknamed Ben-10, persevered and qualified for the Team Elimination Rounds!



On the second day, the Recurve Closed Category kick-started the competition. Our representatives, Minnie, Wen Xuan and Jeremy were all geared up to shoot their best and left everything out on the shooting range. Soon after, the Team Knock-out (TKO) rounds commenced. Despite being ranked near the bottom, our Recurve Closed Team, Ben-10, was up against the team which ranked first!



Undaunted by the challenge ahead, they ploughed through the other teams from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) archery clubs to secure a face-off with Ace Archery in the finals. Our archers gave their best shot on the shooting range. Despite giving their best, Ace Archery won by a slight point advantage and our team had to settle for a Silver medal.



Despite not winning the Gold medal, the team had achieved its goal set before this competition. They had brought glory to Republic Polytechnic.
