Republic Polytechnic (RP) may have lost to Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) last
year, but they were determined to win this time round. Azfal Kassim,
captain of RP, led his team to victory.
The first period posed as a great morale booster for RP due to the colossal number of RP supporters
cheering for them.
A NYP's defensive scramble led to the first goal scored by RP. Ahmad Kamil slammed a stunner through the NYP goalpost,
bringing on cheers from the stand.
Before NYP could recover, Sean Huang Jun Hong of RP, used his speedy pace to
perfection by assisting RP’s Attar Shaheed to make the score line 2-0. Sean Huang kept driving the ball through the legs of NYP’s defence but his pace fell for a lack of accuracy.
NYP was awarded a freekick in the early start of the 2nd period, but the shot taken by NYP’s star player Jatin Nair, could not match the reflexes of RP Goalkeeper Mohammed Firdaus.
NYP’s Sivalingam was quick to seize an opportunity provided by a mistake by RP’s defence by striking a shot, making the scoreline 2-1.
Just when NYP thought they had brought themselves back into the game, RP’s rock in the central of defence, Attar Shaheed, hammered a stunner past the goalkeeper, giving them a 3-1 lead.
A contender for the goal of the match has to be Jatin Nair of NYP. He scored with a fantastic dribble, rounding 3 RP defenders to bring the score closer for NYP. This morale booster goal from Jatin brought the scores to 3-2.
The third period brought back two teams that really wanted to win. Both keepers were forced to make critical saves. Then NYP's Jatin
Nair scored an amazing goal from an impossible angle, and everyone was at a loss
for words. The score was 4-3 at this point with RP in the lead.
Azfal Kassim, showed his determination for victory by scoring from long range. The goal was sufficient to secure RP’s victory by scoring from long range, making the tally 5-3. The game ended with RP ecstatic in beating the defending champions.
When RP Coach, Amir Hamzah Salleh was asked whether last year’s final loss to NYP had any effect in the night’s game, he revealed, “The boys worked
hard throughout the season. Last year, they lost to a sudden death match, when they were leading 5-1 before NYP came back. Therefore, this time they worked very hard and brought back a win.”
The captain of NYP added, “RP played very well. I am very proud of my team and the way they played today. Either way, RP deserved to win."
