Team Republic’s Touch Rugby Girls played their first IVP game in their pool against Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) on 2nd January.
The girls started the tournament with constant communication during attack and
displayed tight defense. The match ended 7-2 to RP with touchdowns from Eunice Chu, Juraini Saini, Suryanti Suryono and Claudia Chng.
On 3rd January, the match was played against Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and concluded at 7-1 to NTU. The last match for the pool was played against Singapore Management University (SMU). Prepared and determined to prove their worth, RP defeated SMU with a whopping 10-0. Their good defense, communication and teamwork on the field did not give any chance for SMU to touchdown. The RP team then proceeded to the semi-finals as second in its pool.
It was a tough fight for the girls as they battled for a place to the finals. The girls competed neck to neck with NUS throughout the game until just before the horn sounded, when as Suryanti Suryono scored the last touchdown to make the final score 4-3 to RP, bringing them to the finals.
RP met again with the defending champions NTU in the finals on 9th January. The match was intense as both teams were tight in defense and quick for attack. The first touchdown from RP was by Denise Ang as she dived to score after a commit and pass by Siti NurAzyan. Following that were touchdowns from Faezah Radiman and Cheryl Choy with the help of Dalinah Latiff with her good commit passes. The final horn sounded and the score was 4-4.
A sudden death had to be carried out to conclude the first and second placing in the IVP. The players in both teams were reduced to only 3 players.
In a flash, NTU ran through the defense line and had a clear path to touch down. The final result stood at 5-4 to NTU.
