At RP, we pursue technology with a relentless passion. While technology plays an integral part in most institutes of higher learning, at RP, technology defines us. The result? An entire campus built around the concept of a fully wireless environment, enabling a 100% mobile population. We harness IT to its maximum to simplify our processes and enhance productivity.

Since Day One, a comprehensive IT infrastructure has been put in place for optimal connectivity and limitless knowledge-sharing. Staff and students enjoy a campus-wide wireless network, cutting loose conventional ties between the desk and study. In the past year, the wireless infrastructure has been further enhanced to support the increased number of users with better connection reliability. This service, coupled with the 100% notebook ownership policy for staff and students translates into a totally mobile and IT-savvy population at RP.

A revolutionary communication system using VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) has been implemented at RP. Leveraging on our wireless LAN infrastructure, the VoIP system uses softphones and offers complete mobility for staff. Breaking new grounds with the system from Cisco Systems, RP will be the first academic institution in the world to fully test the wireless VoIP system on such a large scale. The system will act as a test bed for the design and implementation of the telephony system at the Woodlands campus as well as provide a platform for staff and students to develop XML-based applications for VoIP.

Another breakthrough at RP in terms of communication is the use of IM (Instant Messaging). IM allows for synchronous and real-time communication anywhere and at any time, made possible by our wireless infrastructure and pervasive laptop usage. Configured with both data and voice features, IM is already the choice mode of communication among staff and students.

A software infrastructure was created, allowing for software to be installed through the network. Using this service, staff and students who have been granted usage rights can download any software they want without having to borrow the CD and remembering the keys.

Hand in hand with an IT-centric environment is the need for a resilient IT security system, to prevent illegitimate activity and intrusion by unauthorised parties. Stringent user account management, firewalls, anti-virus systems and so on, are part and parcel of our IT security infrastructure. Our efforts in this area have won us the right to publish the TrustSG logo on our website.
